If you ask those of us who live here, the short answer is June and September: good water, long days, everything open and half the crowds of August. But it depends on what you're coming for. For the beach with kids, the whole summer; for kitesurfing and windsurfing, spring and autumn; for quiet walks and eating without booking, October to May, bearing in mind that many seasonal businesses will be closed.
So you can decide based on data rather than brochures, below is the weather in La Manga month by month: air temperature from AEMET (the Spanish met office) normal values at the San Javier airport station (the nearest, right by the Mar Menor) and the average water temperature of the Mediterráneo off La Manga.
Quick fact
The area gets about 2.600 hours of sunshine a year and only 313 mm of rain, spread over about 33 days (AEMET, San Javier). The months with the most rainy days are October to December; July averages barely half a day.

Air temperatures: AEMET averages of daily highs and lows (San Javier airport, 1981-2010). Water: approximate monthly average of the Mediterráneo off La Manga. These are averages: any given day can vary by several degrees, and recent summers have been hotter than these figures.
The water: the Mar Menor and the Mediterráneo are not the same
La Manga has two seas and each one has its own temperature. The Mar Menor is a shallow lagoon, so it warms up and cools down much faster than the Mediterráneo. Measurements by the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (Spanish Institute of Oceanography) since 2016 give averages of between 28 and 30 °C in high summer and between 10 and 14 °C in winter. In practice: from June to September the Mar Menor is warmer than the Mediterráneo, and from December to March it's colder. If you're coming with children, there are Mar Menor beaches for them and the rest in our beach guide.
The weather in La Manga in October
October is one of the most rewarding months and one of the most underrated. Highs are around 24 °C, the Mediterráneo stays above 23 °C and the Mar Menor, although it has cooled a little, is still fine for swimming in the first half of the month. The downside is the rain: October averages 3 or 4 rainy days and it is DANA season (the gota fría, or cold drop), which when it arrives dumps a lot of rain in a short time. Usually it is just one or two odd days; for those, you have our rainy day plans.
As for the atmosphere, after the Pilar long weekend La Manga empties out a lot: some beach bars and seasonal businesses close, but Cabo de Palos keeps its restaurants open and accommodation prices drop noticeably.
The weather in La Manga in April
In April highs are around 20 °C and lows around 10 °C, with plenty of sun (over 220 hours a month on average) and few rainy days. The water is still cold for swimming, about 17 °C in the Mediterráneo, so it is a month for walks, cycling, diving in a wetsuit and terrace time. It is a good time to climb up to the Cabo de Palos lighthouse or to visit Calblanque without the summer access restrictions. If Easter falls then (in 2027 it runs from 21 to 28 March), those days get almost as busy as summer and it is worth booking ahead.
What each season is like
The list
- 1July and August: everything open, buzzing atmosphere and higher prices. You need to get up early to park and book to eat. For August, see how to park in summer.
- 2June and September: the sweet spot. Warm water, nearly everything open and far fewer people; in September, though, watch out for late-summer storms.
- 3Spring and autumn: wind season. With levante or poniente, La Manga is one of the best spots in España for kitesurfing and windsurfing; there are schools such as Kitecenter and more in water sports.
- 4Winter: sunshine and calm, but many apartments, beach bars and restaurants on the Gran Vía close. You are better off basing yourself in Cabo de Palos or La Manga Club, and check the restaurant directory to see what is open.
