August is when La Manga is in full swing: everything open, music in the bars, the Gran Vía busy until late and both shores full of people from early on. It is also the month of sticky heat, queues to park and booking ahead even to eat a rice dish. With a little planning you will enjoy it a lot; without it, you will spend half the day looking for a spot.

Here are the plans that work in August, the fiestas that fall that month (using the 2026 dates as a reference, since they repeat in the same weeks every year) and tips for coping with the heat and the car.

Quick fact

According to AEMET, August is the hottest month in the area: an average high of 29,5 °C, a low of 21,5 °C and 72 % humidity, which is why the nights feel heavy. It rains less than one day a month on average, and the Mar Menor reaches 28-30 °C.

August fiestas and events

Cabo de Palos fiestas, in honour of the Virgen del Mar. They are held in mid-August, around the 15th. In 2026 they started on Friday 14 with a street parade, the flower offering and a sardine feast, and Saturday 15 was the main day, with mass and the Virgin's seafaring procession around the harbour, which is the part not to miss. Do not confuse them with the Virgen del Carmen, which is on 16 July and also goes out to sea in many harbours in the area.

Cabo de Pop. An indie pop and rock festival with free entry next to the Cabo de Palos lighthouse, coinciding with the fiestas. In 2026 it was on 14 and 15 August, with a free shuttle bus from the Las Dunas car park up to the lighthouse esplanade: use it, because driving up on those nights is impossible.

Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas, in La Unión (about 25 minutes by car). It's the big flamenco festival of the year and ends in early August: in 2026 it ran from 29 July to 8 August, with the Lámpara Minera final on the last day in the Catedral del Cante.

San Javier Theatre, Music and Dance Festival. It fills almost all of August at the Parque Almansa auditorium in San Javier, with well-known names and free street theatre; in 2026 it closed on 23 August with Luz Casal. Tickets are sold on its official website and the big names sell out fast.

Markets. In July and August there is a night craft market in La Manga on Thursdays and Saturdays, as well as the Cabo de Palos market every Sunday morning. And on the night of 12 to 13 August, with the Perseids, any stretch of beach on the Mediterráneo away from the street lights is good for spotting shooting stars.

Plans that work in August

The list

  • 1Dive or snorkel in the Cabo de Palos marine reserve: in August the water is at its best. Book a trip with a diving school a few days ahead.
  • 2Take a boat trip or hire a licence-free boat to explore the Mar Menor and its islands; you have options in boating.
  • 3Go to Calblanque on bus 440 from the Los Belones park-and-ride: in summer car access is restricted (in 2026, the bus ran from 4 July to 30 August).
  • 4Watch the sunset in Cabo de Palos or at the Estacio lighthouse, and stay on for dinner afterwards.
  • 5Eat a caldero in Cabo de Palos (book ahead): we tell you how to spot a good one in the caldero guide.
  • 6With small children, spend the mornings on the Mar Menor beaches, with no waves and shallow water.

Coping with the heat

The rule we locals follow: Mar Menor first thing in the morning and at sunset, Mediterráneo in the middle of the day, when the water is cooler and there is usually a bit of a breeze. Between 14:00 and 17:00, shade, siesta or the pool. There are very few trees on the strip, so a sunshade is essential, as are water and footwear for the sand, which burns at midday.

August nights rarely drop below 21 °C and the humidity makes them heavy. If you are looking for accommodation, make sure it has air conditioning: in La Manga it is not a luxury in August.

Parking and traffic

In August, the car barely moves. The entrance to La Manga along the Gran Vía gets jammed mid-morning and when people head back from the beach, and the Estacio bridge opens now and then to let boats through, stopping traffic for a few minutes. If you are going to the beach, get in early: you will find all the tricks in our article on parking in La Manga in summer. To get around the strip without a car, check the La Manga bus routes.

What if it rains?

It does not happen often, but it does happen: in late August there can be afternoon storms or a gota fría episode that pours down hard and clears in a few hours. On that day, the things that usually have queues do not. We have some ideas in what to do in La Manga when it rains.
