Remembering the 1906 shipwreck beside the lighthouse

The Cruz Memorial Víctimas del Sirio is a cross in Cala Túnez, in Cabo de Palos, near the lighthouse, dedicated to those who died in the wreck of the steamship Sirio in 1906, off this coast.

The wreck of the Sirio

The Sirio was a passenger steamship sailing between Génova and Buenos Aires, carrying hundreds of emigrants. It struck the shoals around the Islas Hormigas and sank off Cabo de Palos. The scale of the tragedy has led to it sometimes being called the Titanic of Mediterráneo.

The 120th anniversary

On 4 August 2026, 120 years after the wreck, Cala Túnez hosted a tribute to the victims and to the fishermen of Cabo de Palos who took part in the rescue, beside the restored cross.
