Stone ramp down to the water among rocks at Cala de la GaleraCove among rocks with a pinnacle and a white house on top, on the coast of Cabo de PalosIslet opposite Cala de la Galera, with La Manga in the background

A rocky cove opposite the Isla del Pato

Cala de la Galera is a small rocky cove between Levante beach and the lighthouse, next to the path around the cape. It has no sand or room to lay a towel: you go down to the water by steps cut into the rock.

The Isla del Pato

Opposite the cove is the Isla del Pato, an islet whose outline looks like a duck with its head in the water. In Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional the cove is listed as Cala Hierro.

What to bring

Wear water shoes or reef shoes: the whole way in is rock.

Getting here

You reach it on foot along the path around Cabo de Palos between Playa de Levante and the lighthouse. The same walk links other coves around the headland, leads up to the lighthouse or down to the harbour. If you enjoy this kind of swimming spot, take a look at the local beaches and coves.
